iOS FAQ’s
This article contains frequently asked questions about getting started and accessing applications on your device.
Please read through this article if you have an issue with your device and follow the answers provided in order to try to resolve the issue yourself.
Important:
If you are unable to resolve your issue with the help of these FAQ’s, please contact your local IT Admin/s. Contact details for your local IT Admin/s can be found in the Intune Private Trial Help & Support article.
Local IT Admin/s will be responsible for the configuration of devices and policies, so not all of these issues will be applicable to users.
Getting Started on iOS
- Why isn’t my device turning on?
If your device is not turning on, it could mean that your device battery level is too low. In this instance, you should plug in your device into a power socket. If your device is still having issues turning on, there may be a hardware issue and your device will need to be replaced. Please contact your local IT Admin/s.
- How do I enrol my iOS/iPadOS into Intune?
Devices have already been enrolled into ABM (Apple Business Manager) and have been preconfigured to be business devices with NHS policies applied to meet standard requirements.
Once the device is connected to Wi-Fi it should recognise that it is a managed device and prompt the
following message:
Please contact your local IT Admin/s if your device in not enrolled into ABM.
- Is VPN Connectivity required?
No, VPN connectivity will not be required to login to your device or to access web applications.
- What is Guided Access mode?
Guided Access mode limits the ability to control certain functions of your device such as the home button, volume, touchscreen etc.
Once you have completed the Apple setup wizard, your device will start in Guided access mode while the Company Portal app installs in the background.
This is designed to make sure that you enrol your device into NHS Intune before first usage.
- What applications are pre-installed?
Google Chrome and the Company Portal app will be pre-installed on the device. All other stock Apple applications (pre-built) will also be available on the device.
- Can I access my Outlook/email on the device?
Outlook will not be installed on the baseline device. If you need to check your Outlook/email, you can do this via the Internet using the web browser.
- Why can’t I install applications from the app store?
Downloading applications has been disabled in the baseline build. If you require an application on the device, please reach out to your local IT Admin/s.
- How do I close an application/ application has crashed?
To close an application, double click the home button and swipe the application you wish to close off the screen.
- How do I access web applications?
Web applications will be accessible through the Google Chrome browser.
- Why can’t I access the iTunes/App store?
As part of the baseline build this has been disabled. If you require an application on the device, please reach out to your local IT Admin/s.
- Why can’t I download/ play local media? (Apple TV, Apple Music)
As part of the baseline build this has been locked. However, media content should still be able to be played through the Google Chrome browser.
- Why can’t I use Siri? (Dictation, voice assistant etc)
As part of the baseline build Siri has been disabled from the lock screen. Siri is still accessible once the device is unlocked.
- How do I switch / connect to a wireless network?
Please follow the steps below to switch your Wi-Fi connection.
- Swipe down from the top right side of the screen to open the Control Centre
- Click “Wi-Fi” from the menu
- Select the network you wish to connect to
You may need to enter a password for the Wi-Fi network to connect. You should be able to access this locally.
- Why won’t my iOS device connect to Wi-Fi? Why has my device disconnected from Wi-Fi?
Check that your device is not on airplane mode. You can do this by opening the Control Centre. Swipe down from the top right side of the screen to open the Control Centre. Check your network settings to make sure your device has Wi-Fi enabled and is connected to a Wi-Fi network.
- Why won’t my files open locally?
The file may be trying to open in an application which is not installed locally. Please use web browser alternatives if required.
- Why can’t I open PDFs?
Adobe PDF reader is not pre-installed on the device. Please use web alternatives if required.
- Will I be able to use in-private browsing mode?
InPrivate browsing mode will be available on the iPad as an option. However, this won’t be enforced as the iPad is configured with a guest account and it will wipe all your data once you log out.
Accessories (External Devices)
- How do I connect peripherals to my iPad (smart card, barcode scanner, sim card dongle)?
Barcode scanners and other essential work-related accessories will be able to connect via Bluetooth.
Troubleshooting
- Why is my device crashing?
If your device is crashing regularly, there may be a hardware fault with your device. Please contact your local IT Admin/s to get this further investigated. If this is a hardware fault, the device will need to be replaced.
Extra
- Can I change the brightness?
iPad brightness can be adjusted through Control Centre.
Please follow the steps below to switch your Wi-Fi connection.
- Swipe down from the top right side of the screen to open the Control Centre.
- Swipe up and down on the brightness bar to increase and decrease.
- Is blue light filter available?
Some accessibility features such as blue light filter/ dark mode can be accessed through the Control centre.
Please follow the steps below to switch your Wi-Fi connection.
- Swipe down from the top right side of the screen to open the Control Centre.
- Press down on the brightness bar for 3 seconds.
- True tone, Night shift and Dark mode options will appear.
- Why is my battery draining?
If the device battery is draining, it could be running a background process such as a software/ application update or application. If this is a persistent or constant issue, please contact your local IT Admin/s.
- Will I be able to use an e-Sim?
You will be able to use an e-sim however, you will not be able to make any modifications in the settings app since this has been blocked as a part of the baseline configuration.
